Abstract
Since Papanicolaou, G.N. described the pathological features of the cytology in vaginal mucous membrane from pregnant rat, it was of utility value to human beings and much advancement of exfoliative-cytology about malignant tumors achieved.
Especially, which contributed to the early detection of carcinoma of cervix through the vaginal smear in gynecological field. But in otorhinolaryngological field, by Muller et al. (1951) and Montgomery (1951), normal cornification in the oal cavity was reviewed and Montgomery and Haam (1951) found that carcinoma in the oral cavity produced recognizable cell forms.
Thereafter Morrison et al. (1949), Pomeranz et al. (1953), Silverman et al and Sandier et al. (1958) could be detected the nasopharyngeal and oral neoplasm by means of Papanicolaou¢¥s smear. In 1959, Sandler et al scraped directly from any oral or oropharyngeal lesions of leukoplakia, ulceration, granulation, hypertrophy or induration, whether or not carcinoma was suspected and also biopsy specimens were also obtained shortly after the smear. There teas agreement between the two technics in 92=2.7%.
As a series of research about the head and neck tumors, the author tried to pursue the diagnostic value of lapanicolaou¢¥s smear about 50 cases of the head and neck tumors.
